Economies of Care (2019)
Economies of Care is a digital, multimedia project that explores meaningful approaches and empathetic ideas around care and ethical labour practices across communities. Driven by the experiences and stories of Care Workers as well as broader strategies of support inherent to the domestic realm, Economies of Care invites artists to examine the social and political impact of care both within and beyond domestic space. The project features a commissioned essay by writer and editor Tiana Reid, new works by artist and organizer Kara Manso and social practice artist and educator Serena Lee, as well as digital presentations of works by interdisciplinary artist Florence Yee, and curatorial project by writer and curator Erica Cristobal.
Economies of Care is presented in collaboration with the City of Mississauga and Public Volumes, which broadly addresses the concept of spatial justice through multi-site exhibitions, writing and public programming. Economies of Care also anticipates the upcoming Koffler Gallery exhibition, Undomesticated, which brings together a range of works by Canadian artists who subvert domestic objects and the settings of dwelling spaces, revealing the flawed human attempts at achieving a sense of belonging.
